Saddam Hussein Executed
Saddam Hussein, the deposed President of Iraq, was sentenced to death by hanging. Earlier in the year, Hussein was convicted of the crimes against humanity for the murder of 148 Shiites in the town Dujail. This was after an assassination attempt on Hussein’s life, and was an act of retaliation. Hussein had been captured 3 years prior to the execution by the U.S. military, and was put on trial by the Iraqi Interim Government. He was executed on the 30th of December at 6 am at Camp Justice, a joint American-Iraqi military base. However, the entire execution process was controlled by the Iraqi government. Ironically, his execution occurred in the same place that he and his men would torture and kill other Iraqis before the American invasion. Some witnesses say that he did not fight or yell in his final moment, while others say that he jeered back at the crowd and the hangmen. This moment was a major step forward for the democratic cause, as Saddam was the leader and president of our opponents, and was a symbol of dictatorship and defiance in the Middle East. Some of his troops also lost moral and even deserted the army after this, which only made it easier for the American military.
