President Bush Declares Mission Accomplished
On May 1, 2003, President Bush went aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln to announce that the major operations and combat in Iraq are over. He makes this appearance on his way back from the Persian Gulf. Behind where he stood to give the speech there was a very large banner reading "Mission Accomplished" colored in red, white, and blue with the image of an American flag in the background. During the speech he talks about how the coalitions will be concerned with rebuilding Iraq. He says that the war has been fought for the cause of liberty and the peace of the world. Bush thanks the troops for their courage and states that without their dedication this day would have never been possible. Bush says the tyrant has fallen and Iraq is finally free. Bush talks about how the tyrant built palaces for himself instead of hospitals and schools for his people. He complimented the precision and boldness of the American armed forces. He also thanks the armed forces of the United Kingdom, Australia, and Poland. He continues to talk about how grateful America is for a job well done with the execution of the war. The entire speech is very dramatic and meaningful.
